Jill's Favourite Native American Quotes

This is just a stack of quotes, prayers and proverbs that I read and written down at various times, I'm sorry I can't credit them as I've just written down the actual quotes and I can't remember where I got them from or who they were by. I hope you enjoy them.

Cherokee Blessing

May the warm winds of Heaven blow softly on your home
and the Great Spirit bless all who enter there.
May your mocassins make happy tracks in many snows,
and may the rainbow always touch you shoulder

Cherokee Prayer

Oh Great Spirit
grant that I may never find fault with my neighbour
until I have walked the trail of life in his mocassins.

"Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway."

"Treat the earth well. It was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children."

"What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset."

"All things share the same breath - the beast, the tree, the man - the air shares its spirit with all the life it supports."

"How smooth must be the language of the whites, when they can make right look like wrong and wrong like right."

"We must protect the forests for our children, grandchildren and children yet to be born. We must protect the forests for those who cannot speak for themselves such as the birds, animals, fish and trees."

"When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced; Live your life in such a way that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice"

This next one was I believe a Native American proverb and I think it is so beautiful.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamonds' glints on snow,
I am the sunshine on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the mornings,
Hush, I am the swift up-flinging,
Of quiet birds in circling flight,
I'm the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.
